It makes some sense that she would cling to her faith as a way to get through tough times, but it seemed almost obsessive. At times the story became too preachy and it seemed forced. That ruined it somewhat hence the 1 star taken off. Nick was overall a good man although he had become jaded by too many bad breaks. It was encouraging to see him gain hope of a new life, but sad that Clancy died after she seemed to be recovering. Her statement that she wasn't worried about dying is little consolation given the fact that she had her whole life ahead of her and it was still a tragedy that all her determination ended up being for naught after already going through enough as the child of a drug addict.
I think the lesson she needed was that GOOD things can happen, not just bad things, but although her friendship with Nick was a good thing, it ended way too soon. This girl deserved to grow up and have a full and happy life, but instead she didn't. The symbolism of her dying to inspire Nick to reinvent his life seemed to relate to Jesus dying on the cross, and then there was the symbolism of "the sins of the father being visited upon his son" sins of her mother being visited upon her daughter Clancy. This is intrinsically unfair that this girl was somehow sacrificed, put in harm's way by her mother, and more unpalatable that she was OK with it.
Although it wouldn't be good for her to be bitter, she was also way too passive, and a little more spunk probably would have increased her ability to survive and to believe she deserved better. This is what Nick was trying to tell her. The part of the story about political corruption was quite believable and this Mayor reminded me very much of the governor of my state and many other politicians who seem to have sold their souls just to be reelected. Doing the right thing is the furthest from their mind. It is quite relevant to lots of instances happening today.

NancyM Reviewed in the United States on March 16, Clancy is a young girl who is both physically and mentally abused by her drug addict mother who blames her child for everything that has gone wrong in her life. In spite of this, Clancy loves her, and fearing that Social Services will remove her from the home and place her in foster care, she runs away in the hopes that her mother will seek help. Her first night on her own, Clancy is noticed by a homeless Gulf War veteran. A bit cynical, but with a kind heart, Nick follows her to the park, and as she beds down for the night, he sits a short distance away to protect her. Understanding that he was looking out for her, she begins to follow him. Unwilling to keep a child on the street, he phones a friend in the police department to report the runaway, but before the officer can pick her up, a corrupt mayor, seeking re-election, sees an opportunity for a sensational "rescue", and urges the unsuspecting Nick to look after her a while longer while he puts his plan together.
During this time, a strong bond forms between Clancy and Nick, and he finds himself intrigued by her unshakable faith. As the story unfolds, we learn of Nick's past, how he became homeless, and why he feels unredeemable. The movie culminates in a shocking event that changes everything for both of them. This movie has a strong Christian theme of faith, trust, and redemption, and as such is refreshingly far removed from the typical realm of Hollywood. Given half a chance, this movie will pull you in completely. There are no high-tech special effects, no Hollywood hype, and no big name stars. They are not needed. This movie stands on its own merit, and should be viewed at least once by all people of faith. My guess is, you'll probably want to watch it again. Be sure to keep a few tissues handy! An unexpected ending will definitely tug at the heartstrings. Be sure to watch the "alternate ending". Part of me wishes they had used this as the movie's ending, but it lacks the powerfully emotional impact of the actual ending.

This is a small budget independent film and is a Christian movie. There are negatives to this film: the after-school-special quality of the camera work and direction; the contrived plotting the evil Mayor concocts, that is beyond implausible; the stock nature of the main Character Nick. These negatives are offset by the warm-hearted-ness of the message, the acting of young lead Christina Fougnie, and the simplicity of the relationship between the main characters. In a nutshell, a young girl Clancy runs away from the consequences of her drug-addict mother's behavior. On the street, she ingratiates herself with a homeless, self-destructive, guilt-ridden Iraqi war veteran Nick. He is good man who has given up on life. She is an innocent, hopeful Christian. Plot devices send a spiraling concoction of bad luck and evil against the two.
The joy of the movie is seeing the slow simple friendship and love that develops between the two main characters. The impending tragedy, that you know must await at the ending, serves to give the movie a compelling nature. Although simplistic, Jefferson Moore and Christina Fougnie come through with chemistry that makes it work. I'm not a Christian, but I was not offended by the simple loving belief in God that enabled the young girl to accept her tragic circumstances in a humble fashion, and the explicit ed statement of Chrstianity that she makes during the movie. Although melodramatic and simple, I enjoyed this niche movie's positive and heartfelt intent.
